Samsung Washer 4C Code (4C, 4E, 4C2): What It Means and How to Fix It

Quick answer: On a Samsung washer, 4C, 4E, NF and NF1 all mean the same thing: the washer cannot fill with enough water to run a cycle. Older models show 4E, newer ones 4C or NF. Most cases are fixed by opening both taps fully, straightening the supply hoses and cleaning the small mesh screens where the hoses connect. 4C2 is different: it signals a water temperature problem, most often hot and cold hoses connected to the wrong inlets.

Which code do you have?

Fixes for 4C / 4E / NF, in order

Samsung’s own troubleshooting lists these causes: clogged mesh screens, kinked or clogged supply hoses, hoses on the wrong inlets, taps not fully open, a badly installed drain hose and a dirty detergent drawer.

1. Open both taps all the way

Taps behind washers often get bumped half-closed when the machine is moved. Turn each one fully counterclockwise.

2. Check the supply hoses

Pull the washer forward and look for kinks, especially where the hoses bend behind the machine. In winter, check that the hoses or the wall pipes are not frozen.

3. Clean the inlet mesh screens

This fixes more 4C errors than anything else, especially in homes with hard water or after plumbing work.

  1. Turn off both taps.
  2. Unscrew the hoses from the back of the washer. Keep a towel ready for the water left in them.
  3. Look into the washer’s inlet ports: you will see small mesh screens.
  4. Clean them gently with an old toothbrush. Do not push them in or tear the mesh.
  5. Reconnect the hoses hand-tight plus a quarter turn, then open the taps and check for leaks.

4. Confirm hot goes to hot and cold to cold

The inlets are usually marked red and blue on the back of the washer.

5. Check the drain hose

This sounds unrelated, but Samsung lists it: if the drain hose sits more than 6 inches inside the standpipe, or seals it airtight, water can siphon out while the washer fills. The washer then never reaches its fill level and shows 4C. Pull the hose back so no more than 6 inches is inside the pipe, and leave an air gap around it.

6. Clean the detergent drawer

A drawer clogged with old detergent can block water flow into the drum on some models.

7. Avoid “flood-safe” hoses

Samsung advises against them. Their safety valves can restrict flow enough to trigger 4C.

8. Test the water pressure

Fixes for 4C2 (water too hot)

  1. Check for reversed hoses. This is the most common cause, especially after installation or a move. The hose from the cold tap must go to the cold (blue) inlet.
  2. Feel the cold supply line while the washer fills. If it runs warm, the plumbing may be sending hot water to the cold tap.
  3. Clean both inlet screens. A clogged cold screen lets hot water dominate the mix.
  4. Run a cold-only rinse. If warm water still enters the drum with correct hoses and clean screens, the cold side of the water inlet valve may be faulty. Valve replacement is a moderate repair; consider a technician.

When to call for service

If the taps are open, the hoses are clear, the screens are clean and the error persists, the water inlet valve or the water level (pressure) sensor may have failed. Samsung’s guidance at this point is to contact support for service.

Prevent 4C from coming back

  • Clean the inlet screens once a year, or twice in hard-water areas.
  • Replace rubber supply hoses every five years with braided stainless hoses (not flood-stop types).
  • Keep the drain hose no more than 6 inches into the standpipe.

FAQ

How do I clear the 4C code?

Fix the cause, then press Power to turn the washer off and on and start a new cycle. The code clears once the washer fills normally.

Can low water pressure cause 4C?

Yes. If the washer cannot reach its fill level in the time allowed, it shows 4C even when water is flowing.

Why did 4C appear right after a new installation?

The usual suspects are taps not fully open, protective caps or kinks in new hoses, or a drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe.
