LG Washer OE Error: Causes and Fixes That Actually Work

Quick answer: OE means your LG washer could not drain. On LG top-loaders, the code appears after the washer fails to drain for 13 minutes. Work through four checks in order: a kinked or clogged drain hose, a clogged drain pump filter (front-loaders), too many suds, and finally the drain pump itself. The first three are free fixes that take under 30 minutes.

Causes, from most to least likely

CauseHow to spot itFix difficulty
Kinked, pinched or clogged drain hoseWasher was pushed back recently; hose bent behind itEasy
Clogged drain pump filter (front-load)Slow draining that got worse over weeks; lint or objects in the filterEasy
Too many sudsUsing regular detergent or too much HE detergent; foam visible in the drumEasy
Failed drain pumpNo hum at all during a spin testModerate (part replacement)
Wiring or control faultPump works when tested directly but the washer still errorsTechnician

Step 1: Check the drain hose

Pull the washer away from the wall and follow the hose from the back of the washer to the standpipe or sink. Look for:

  • Sharp bends or kinks, especially where the hose meets the wall
  • A hose pinched between the washer and the wall
  • A clog at the end of the hose (lint, a sock, mineral buildup)

Straighten or clear the hose, push the washer back carefully, and run a spin cycle. If OE does not return, you are done.

Step 2: Do the hum test

This 15-second test tells you whether the drain pump is getting power and trying to run. It comes from LG’s own troubleshooting steps.

  1. Turn the washer on.
  2. Set Spin Speed to High and start a Spin Only cycle.
  3. Listen near the bottom front of the washer for the first 15 seconds.

What the result means:

  • You hear a hum: the pump is running. Go to Step 3 (front-load) or Step 4.
  • No sound at all: the pump is not running. Skip to Step 5.

If your top-load model has no Spin Only option, LG describes a forced drain: start any cycle, wait a few minutes, then pause it. After about 8 minutes the washer times out, shows “dr” and tries to drain.

Step 3: Clean the drain pump filter (front-load models)

On LG front-loaders the filter is behind the service panel at the bottom-left corner.

  1. Turn the washer off and unplug it.
  2. Place a towel and a shallow pan in front of the panel.
  3. Open the panel, unclip the small drain hose and remove its cap. Let the water drain into the pan. Do not pull the hose out too far.
  4. Replace the cap, then twist the filter counterclockwise to remove it.
  5. Clean the filter with warm water and a soft brush, and wipe the opening.
  6. Reinstall the filter clockwise until tight, clip the hose back and close the panel.

Step 4: Rule out excess suds

Foam traps air in the pump, so it pulls air instead of water. LG lists this as a cause of OE when the filter turns out to be clean.

  • Use only HE detergent and follow the dose line for your load size. For soft water, use less.
  • Run a Tub Clean cycle with no detergent to clear residue.
  • Run a normal cycle. If OE comes back, the washer likely needs repair.

Step 5: When the pump is the problem

If there is no hum, or the pump hums but water never moves, the pump may have failed or its impeller may be jammed.

  • Check for a jam first. With the washer unplugged and the filter removed, shine a flashlight into the opening. Remove any object blocking the impeller.
  • Test the pump. With power off, disconnect the pump’s wiring and check it with a multimeter. Compare the reading to the value on your model’s wiring diagram or tech sheet. No reading means the pump motor is open and must be replaced.
  • Replace or call. Drain pump replacement is a moderate DIY job on most LG front-loaders. If you are not comfortable working with wiring, LG’s support site lets you request a repair.

How to prevent OE from coming back

  • Clean the filter monthly (LG’s recommendation for front-loaders).
  • Empty pockets before washing; coins and hair pins are the usual pump-killers.
  • Wash small items in a mesh bag.
  • Run Tub Clean once a month.

FAQ

Can I reset the OE error?

Turning the washer off and on clears the display, but OE returns if the washer still cannot drain. Fix the cause first, then run a Spin Only cycle.

Why does OE appear only with large loads?

Heavy, waterlogged loads push more lint and water through the pump. A partly clogged filter or weak pump can cope with small loads and fail with big ones.

Is it safe to keep using the washer with OE?

No. Standing water can smell, and a pump straining against a jam can burn out.
